Golden Globes Betting Sheet Music
Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama
Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) | -400 |
Adam Driver (Marriage Story) | +225 |
Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory | +1000 |
Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) | +1800 |
Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) | +2000 |
Best Bet: Joker might be polarizing as a motion picture as a whole. But no one can deny that it provided an ideal acting showcase for Phoenix. Plus, who wouldn’t want to see Phoenix, who is notoriously press-shy, give a squirmy acceptance speech.
Value Play: It’s hard to make any kind of a case for Banderas, Pryce or Bale, as fetching as their odd might be. In this case, the only real value is with the second choice, Driver, at a little higher than 2 to 1. His powerful performance in Marriage Story might do the job, although a boost from Star Wars fans in the voting block wouldn’t hurt.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama
Renee Zellweger (Judy) | -350 |
Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) | +250 |
Charlize Theron (Bombshell) | +900 |
Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) | +1200 |
Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) | +1600 |
Best Bet: Zellweger has been riding high in the early part of the awards season for her uncanny turn as Judy Garland. But the movie itself hasn’t enjoyed similarly great reviews. She could be one of the vulnerable favorites.
Value Play: No film has been reviewed as rapturously as Little Women. And Ronan is at the head of the impressive ensemble. A 12 to 1 upset isn’t completely out of the question.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical
Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name) | -175 |
Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) | +175 |
Taron Egerton (Rocketman) | +475 |
Daniel Craig (Knives Out) | +900 |
Roman Griffin Davis (JoJo Rabbit) | +2500 |
Best Bet: Murphy is in the midst of another one of his periodic comebacks. He has the Netflix voting might behind him. And he was genuinely great in a movie that is extremely enjoyable.
Value Play: Knives Out is making a lot of money after getting outstanding reviews, a combination that doesn’t happen often. Craig has the scene-stealing lead role, showing off his ability beyond Bond. 9 to 1 is a nice price to get for a could-be winner.
Best Actress In A Motion Picture Comedy or Musical
Awkwafina (The Farewell) | -400 |
Ana De Armas (Knives Out) | +350 |
Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) | +700 |
Emma Thompson (Late Night) | +900 |
Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go Bernadette) | +2000 |
Best Bet: Awkwafina looks like the one to beat in this race. She’s been on a hot steak over the past few years and this major award could be the culmination of that. The only concern is that her movie hasn’t been as often seen as some of the others in the category.
Value Play: Thompson is as respected as they come in the industry. Her turn as a caustic late-night host modeled on David Letterman won raves. This is a category where upsets often reign, so it could line up well for Thompson here at 9 to 1.
Best Motion Picture Drama
The Irishman | -200 |
Marriage Story | +225 |
1917 | +600 |
Joker | +600 |
The Two Popes | +2000 |
Best Bet:The Irishman overcame huge odds and a lot of skepticism to become a game-changing streaming success. But the movie does have its share of detractors, both for its Netflix affiliation and its lumbering pace. Could that make it ripe for an upset?
Value Play: Either one of the 6 to 1 shots could be a factor. 1917’s stunning technical prowess and moving story make it an old-fashioned awards contender. And Joker still has the buzz, even if it some of it is negative.
Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | -500 |
JoJo Rabbit | +350 |
Knives Out | +700 |
Rocketman | +1400 |
Dolemite is My Name | +1600 |
Best Bet: Quentin Tarantino’s opus has the advantage of being about Hollywood and moviemaking, which puts it right up the alley of Golden Globe voters. That might make it catnip for the voters. The big stars at the center of it don’t hurt either.
Value Play: Count this writer as one of those folks who were underwhelmed by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Knives Out, however, takes a familiar genre and puts an impressive spin on it. Take that at 7 to 1 for a big score.
Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series
Bill Hader (Barry) | -175 |
Ben Platt (The Politician) | +125 |
Ramy Youssef (Ramy) | +550 |
Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) | +800 |
Paul Rudd (Living With Yourself | +1000 |
Best Bet: Hader was somehow even better in the second season of Barry. Perhaps the only thing working against him is that his work on the show was far more dramatic than comedic this season. But he’s still the one to beat.
Value Play: The Golden Globes love to honor underrated talent. And that description certainly fits Youssef. He could be a sneaky play here, although Hader could be tough to topple.
Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) | -550 |
Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) | +275 |
Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Flo) | +600 |
Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll) | +800 |
Christina Applegate (Dead to Me) | +2000 |
Best Bet: Heck, even President Obama is talking up Fleabag these days. After upsetting Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the Emmys, Waller-Bridge is the prohibitive favorite here. Now she’s playing the role of the awards bully trying to hold off the upstarts.
Value Play: Lyonne and her show has been a constant on yearend lists. It’s time that some of that love gets spread to the awards season. It’s unlikely anyone knocks off Waller-Bridge, but she would be the choice if you don’t want to play the chalk.
Best Actor in a Television Drama Series
Brian Cox (Succession) | -450 |
Billy Porter (Pose) | +250 |
Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) | +600 |
Tobias Menzies (The Crown) | +600 |
Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) | +1600 |
Best Bet: Cox is the anchor of the show that, along with Fleabag, dominated the television discussion this year. He takes what could have been your basic King Lear turn and turns it into something somehow more formidable and tragic. Good luck trying to defeat Logan Roy this year.
Value Play: Even though he was brilliant, Cox isn’t the flashiest name on the ballot. That would be Malek, who has the motion picture bona fides now after Bohemian Rhapsody. Plus, it’s the last chance for voters to honor him for Mr. Robot.
Best Actress in a Television Drama Series
Olivia Colman (The Crown) | -115 |
Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show) | +100 |
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) | +500 |
Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) | +800 |
Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) | +1000 |
Best Bet: Colman has made the transition on The Crown incredibly smooth. Still, she has a pretty big name against her in Aniston. Even though Colman is the nominal favorite, this feels like a toss-up.
Value Play: It would be a big surprise if anyone other than the top two won this. But Kidman makes for an interesting selection. Even though Big Little Lies stumbled in its second season, Kidman’s storyline was the most compelling on the show by far.
Best Television Comedy Series
Fleabag | -500 |
The Politician | +300 |
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel | +400 |
Barry | +1200 |
The Kominsky Method | +1400 |
Best Bet: Fleabag has somehow made the unlikely transformation from obscure Amazon series into beloved powerhouse. The Emmy love Fleabag received should be in evidence here as well. It doesn’t hurt that awards darling Mrs. Maisel suffered through a down season.
Value Play: Barry has managed to overcome what seemed like a gimmicky premise to become one of the best series of the past decade. The cast is stellar and the second season improved upon the first. If you want to try to beat Fleabag, this is the way to go, especially at 12 to 1.
Best Television Drama Series
The Crown | -120 |
Succession | -110 |
The Morning Show | +550 |
Big Little Lies | +700 |
Killing Eve | +1200 |
Best Bet: It’s a bit surprising that The Crown is the slight favorite over Succession here. But considering that both shows feature odds of less than even money, you can see how they are sucking up the oxygen in the category. In a coin flip, go with Succession.
Value Play: If you are going to go against the big two, The Morning Show would be the choice. Even though reviews have been mixed, it has the star power. And it also has the novelty factor of being an Apple series.
